This calculator estimates two numbers dietitians use as a starting point: your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) — the energy your body burns at complete rest — and your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), which scales BMR by how active you are. It uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, the modern standard, and multiplies the result by a standard activity factor. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded.
Common questions
What is BMR and what is TDEE?
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the energy your body uses at rest just to stay alive. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is your BMR multiplied by an activity factor, giving a rough estimate of the calories you burn in a typical day.
Which equation does this use?
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is widely regarded as more accurate for most people than the older Harris-Benedict formula. BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + s, where s is +5 for males and −161 for females.
How accurate is this estimate?
It is an estimate, not a measurement. Real energy needs vary with body composition, genetics, and health. Use it as a starting point and adjust based on how your weight actually responds over a few weeks.
What activity level should I pick?
Sedentary is little or no exercise; Light is 1–3 days a week; Moderate is 3–5 days; Active is 6–7 days; Very active is hard daily exercise or a physical job. When unsure, pick the lower option — most people overestimate.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The math runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server — the calculation is fully client-side and private.
